Seriously, you'll only get to see it if it happens to be erupting the day of your visit. Helicopter is best, you can try to take your rental car there even though they tell you not too. Please be careful..so you can come back to give me the 10 points!

Todd, I think I can answer this for Brent. The snow after a big storm on Mauna Kea is elusive. The only people that ever see it is the crew that plows the road. Otherwise, we're limited to seeing it first on the webcams which are often covered by ice, turned of or focused on scientists inside the domes.

Scientists are usually the first people allowed up the mountain. The Mauna Kea management offices seem to believe they are most qualified to go up first.

The best and perhaps the only way to check out the snow immediately after a big storm would be to heli-up or kite up. Or maybe disguise yourself as a scientist in a four runner?

I'm not aware of anyone that has done this before.

So any comments you've heard might just be attempts to discourage others from ascending. That's pretty kewl since it's really not a great place for beginners. Without a ski patrol, the Mauna Kea Management efforts are basically fostering a dangerous set of circumstances. The Public Safety Committee apparently doesn't consider a Snow Patrol or Ski Patrol in their assessment of safety on the mountain.

That aside, it's a really amazing place to ride. I've riding a lot of places in North America and although riding Mauna Kea is full of short rides, hikes and extreme conditions, the snow can be amazing. Don't expect powder but do expect a high like no other place.

The energy is really intense. Perhaps from the sacred burial grounds? The Hawaian's reverence and worship of the Mountain have set a stage for absolute bliss. The "mana" of the mountain is incredible. The only place I've experienced that is similar would be something like Banff National Park in Canada. The Indian tribes in that area worshiped their mountains similarly. I would imagine similar practices in the Andes and Himalayas.

Maybe someone else can share their experiences riding some of those hills?

dude, thank you! those are insane pics. can you post a commentary? i am a hawaii transplant living in the bay area (board every week) and am so curious as to the snow on mauna kea after a big storm. i've heard such disparaging things about it but i'd love to here from someone that's actually done it!

aloha Tim, lucky we live Hawaii!

I setup your account so you're now an editor on the site. To create your own post (with photos), just login to the site using your registration info. I just resent the details to your email address.

Once you're logged in, go to the "Write" link at the top of the page. Then create your post. There's an upload feature beneath the text editing area -like facebook, myspace etc.

After you're added your photos and text, just save the post. You'll see your new post appear on the homepage. :)

If all this web work takes away from your riding time, jess send me the photos in an email attachment and I'll make it happen. :)

If anyone has been affected by this, please leave a comment. To check your site for a vulnerability, please read below...

--
Quickly checking through the basic source of your home page, I found this code (Note: I didn't use all of the code. So ust search for iframe and traffic statistics):

iframe src=

(I have intentionally added spaces to remove the hyperlink).

I am quite certain that you didn't put in that. The IP address if of an ISP somewhere in China. (Check out any of the IP lookup website and you will
know). Also I found this entry that has a similar problem.

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/149745.

It seems that wordpress is quite known to have an iframe injection vulnerability.

Please remove the code above and I am certain you case for removing from the malware sites list will move quicker. Once done, I suggest you take this up
with your hosting provider to find out why this was compromised and efforts to prevent future occurences.

Best regards,
The "The site may harm your computer" warning has been removed. It took me asking for a review three times, ranting in a forum at stopbadware.org and eventually getting an angry Google / stopbadware supporter.

Apparently, the practice of demonizing website owners isn't limited to forums. Follow all the online fun in the stopbadware.org google discussion group.

I am looking for an update of anyone who has been up there in the last day or two and can tell me how much snow there is (is there a solid base or is it real thin and going to hack my board up?

They closed the road again yesterday... This morning looks really good but the road is still closed. It "might open in the afternoon"

I recommend going up and waiting at the Visitor Information Station until the road opens.
